Photography Capstone
On the Trails in Good Company follows my journeys through state and national parks, focusing on the relationship between humans and nature. The locations I visited for this project are Acadia National Park in Maine, Franconia Notch, the Kancamagus Highway, and Canterbury in New Hampshire. This project is a series of color photographs with an accompanying photo book of the same title. The work documents the area, the people I travel with, and strangers interacting with nature. I’ve always been drawn to the outdoors; my parents brought my siblings and I on many outdoor adventures growing up. I enjoyed hiking, my brothers’ mountain bikes, and in the last couple years my family has been kayaking. We like to try new things and the adventures we go on have only gotten bigger as my siblings and I have gotten older. During my undergraduate years, I’ve become very interested in documentary photography; this project almost feels like a large-scale version of the first documentary assignment I completed in my junior year. I liked talking to the strangers that I photographed and getting their stories. There’s at least one memorable interaction with a stranger from each location. This was something that I wasn’t trying to do at first, but it became a fun aspect of the project. To create this work, I camped at each location twice and dedicated a chapter to each trip in my photobook. While producing the photographs, my main goals were to document the landscape, the local wildlife, and people interacting with the surrounding nature.
